It's interesting this is the movie Rob Zombie had to be talked into making, because he actually seems far more consistently engaged with the material this time around. Unlike 2007's Halloween , this movie actually does have a level of interest in its characters beyond "boy, ain't this all so fucked up?" Of all the " Halloween movie about the aftermath of living through a Halloween movie"'s, this feels the most dedicated to that idea. It's almost oppressive in its dour tone, especially in the director's cut. Yet it operates with a profound sense of empathy for its young female protagonist, the same character the first film felt almost entirely disinterested in.
